Hello! I'm very sorry for not blogging on here in a while. Lately I've been very discouraged that no one is posting on here or Liking our Facebook page and I guess I haven't had anything to say on here. But there's something that has been on my heart a lot. And really, I think about it a lot anyway.
Words.
Yep. Words have SO much power! They can either build someone up or tear them down. Yet it seems that not many people know how to wield such power. People just throw around words like they're nothing and say whatever is on their minds, not even realizing that they could be hurting someone. I know I try to think before I speak, I am not always successful but taming the tongue is a hard task.
One thing along these lines that I've been thinking about is bullying. Face to face or hiding behind a screen. Its still the same. See, bullies throw words at others with the intent on hurting someone. That just breaks my heart for so many reasons. Like, why would someone feel they had to break someone down like that? Possibly because they had the same thing done to them or maybe some other reasons. But then you have those people who get picked on by their friends or family. Maybe they don't even realize they're hurting you, but the words hurt nonetheless. The sad thing is, we can't stop people from saying hurtful things, we can only control ourselves. So what do we do when people are mean? Let me share some of my advice.
1.) Counter the lie with a truth
When someone says something untrue about you (e.g 'you're ugly.' 'you're stupid.' 'you can't do anything right.') remind yourself of something true. (e.g 'I am beautiful.' 'I am gifted.' 'I can do all things with Christ.') Recognize that the person who said those hurtful things to you wasn't thinking through what they said or was purposefully trying to bring you down. So don't let them win.
2.) Know your identity
Be strong and know who you really are. When you are confident in yourself its a lot harder for negative comments to slip through. Maybe you don't know who you are yet, so maybe take some time and find out. It may take a very long time, like, weeks. But don't worry, you are unique and your true self is worth finding.
3.) Talk it out.
Grab your best friend and tell them about it and have them remind you of the truth. If you don't have a friend you can vent to you can always email me or Diana here at [email protected]. We love hearing your stories! (HINT: Seriously email us because hearing from people like you makes my life, no joke. Ok? Cool.)
But here's the catch: words only have the power you give them.
So don't let those words control you.
